Waypoint #3: Run your board's work from Claude or ChatGPT
Karma Compass now works as a connector in Claude and ChatGPT, so you can run your board's work from the assistant you already use.

Waypoints is our weekly note on what we shipped in Karma Compass, so you can follow along as it grows.
Say it's the week before a board meeting and you already have Claude or ChatGPT open for a grant report. The chair asks what's still open from last meeting. That used to mean a new tab, a login and another place to look.
This week you can ask from the window you already have open. Type "What is still open?" into Claude or ChatGPT and Karma Compass answers from your board's records.
One of our biggest bets is that work should happen where you already are. Nobody needs yet another portal to log in to. That's why we're investing heavily here. We want anything you can do in Karma Compass to be something you can do from ChatGPT, Claude or any of your agents.
Can I use Karma Compass from Claude or ChatGPT?
Yes. Karma Compass now works as a connector in Claude and ChatGPT. In technical terms it's a remote MCP server, so Claude Code, Codex and other apps that take a custom connector or remote MCP server can use it too.
Once it's connected, you can ask your assistant to:
- answer what the board decided and what is still open
- schedule a meeting, invite the board and draft the agenda and packet
- add action items and write to owners who have gone quiet
- draft minutes from a transcript or your notes
- run the board's playbooks
It works under your own login. Your assistant can see and do only what your role on the board allows. It asks for your yes before anything that can't be undone, and it votes for you only when you tell it how. Every change it makes is marked with the app that made it.
Some steps still need a person. Adding a member, approvals and adopting minutes each wait for your click in Karma Compass. Your assistant prepares the step and gives you a link to the screen where you confirm it.
How do I connect Karma Compass to Claude or ChatGPT?
Open "Connected agents" in the Compass sidebar, under Automation. Copy the connector address and follow "How to connect Claude, ChatGPT and others".
In Claude, open Customize, choose "+ Add", then "Add custom connector". Name it Karma Compass and paste the address. On a Team or Enterprise plan, an owner adds it once and everyone else selects Connect. In ChatGPT you add it as a custom MCP server, and in a work workspace an administrator may need to allow that first.
Compass then asks you to sign in with the code it emails you and press Allow. There are no API keys to copy. To cut off access, press "Disconnect" on the Connected agents page. Your assistant loses access within ten minutes.
Connecting is included in every Karma Compass plan, Free included. Your Claude or ChatGPT plan is separate. Anything that needs Compass Pro inside Compass, such as playbooks or emailing action item owners from Mission Control, still needs it from your assistant.
One more thing to know: the company behind your assistant, such as Anthropic or OpenAI, sees what the assistant reads, under its own terms.
What happens when an action item owner replies "done"?
Renee owes the board a revised budget, and it's a week late. An organization admin or executive director, or a board's admin, chair or executive director, can open her row on Mission Control and choose "Email Renee". Compass writes a draft, you edit it if you like and send it, and it goes out from you via Karma Compass. Replies go to you and to Karma.
When Renee writes back "done", her words appear on the item's row: Renee replied "done": mark complete? Press "Mark complete" and the item closes with her reply kept as its evidence. "Dismiss" sets the reply aside and the item stays open.
Compass reads replies that say the work is done, that it's blocked, or that ask a question. It never closes an item by itself. The button is for organization admins and executive directors who sit on the board, and the board's chair, vice chair, secretary or staff liaison. Your assistant can tell you what Renee said, but it can't complete or dismiss the item.
Only a reply from Renee counts. The reply address lasts 30 days and stops working once the item is completed, cancelled or given to someone else.
Mission Control rows are also shorter. Each one now shows the title, the due date, who it waits on ("You" if it's yours), the status and one button. Open a row to see which meeting the item came from.
Emailing owners from Mission Control, and acting on their replies, needs Compass Pro.
How do I share a board packet with someone who isn't on Compass?
Sometimes your auditor or a new committee member needs the packet the board received. Now a meeting manager can open the meeting's Agenda page, choose "Share the packet the board received", then "Create shareable link".
Anyone with that link can read and download the packet without signing in. The page names your board as the source. Any board member can copy an active link, and a meeting manager can press "Stop sharing" at any time. After that, the old link shows that the packet is no longer available.
Only a published packet can be shared, and never an executive-session one. Creating a link is always a person's decision, made in Compass. Your assistant can't create or stop one, and every link is recorded in the audit history.
Packet links are available on every plan.
Can a playbook email someone only when it finds a problem?
Yes, with Compass Pro. A playbook is a check Compass runs on your board's records. A playbook such as "email Maya Chen if the board has no treasurer" now sends that email only when the condition holds.
When it does send, the email carries your approved wording exactly, followed by "What it found in the board's records": one plain line for each record behind the problem. A second model checks every line against those records first. If anything looks doubtful, the list is left out and only your approved wording goes.
We also rebuilt how you set a playbook up. Every check has its own page. You can try it and edit it while it's off, and the wording saves as you type. The order is "Try it first", "Review who it emails", approve the recipients, then "Turn on". A try says "Shows who it would email today. Sends nothing." A real run is listed under "Last run", and "Run again" says who that run emails. If a run fails partway, the page says "This run stopped before it finished, so nobody was emailed."
Viewing playbooks works on every plan. Trying, editing and turning them on is for organization admins and executive directors, or a board's admin, chair or executive director with an active term, and needs Compass Pro.
Can you correct minutes after the board adopts them?
Yes. A correction goes through Compass, and the original stays on record. Before this week, adopted minutes couldn't be changed at all.
A meeting manager presses "Propose a correction". Compass makes a full draft from the adopted text, marked "Proposed correction, not adopted yet". The adopted minutes stay the official record until an administrator, executive director, chair or secretary confirms "Adopt the correction". The new official PDF reads "OFFICIAL BOARD RECORD — AMENDED" with the date. The earlier version stays readable under Record history, and the audit history shows who proposed and who adopted.
A correction doesn't change action items, and it isn't emailed to the board on its own. Correcting minutes works on every plan.
Is there a free way to check our board's composition?
There is now, at compass.karmahq.org/board-check. No account needed.
Enter your nonprofit's website and choose "Find my board". Compass looks for your directors on your public pages and only suggests names that appear there. Or choose "Enter names myself". Then answer three short questions about each director. "Not sure" is a fine answer.
You get a score out of 10 with every point explained. It covers six areas: financial oversight, fundraising and resources, governance, program or mission expertise, strategy and leadership, and community relationships. You also see which areas only one person covers and some questions to bring to your next meeting. You can have the full report emailed to you, and the form tells you that our team receives a copy.
The 10 points cover this short checklist and nothing broader about how your board performs.
Can directors RSVP from their calendar?
Yes, and it's the same idea as the connector: answer from where you already are. Every RSVP email from Compass carries a calendar invitation. Until this week, a Yes pressed on that invitation bounced, because it named a mailbox that didn't exist.
Now, when a director answers Yes, Maybe or No in Gmail, Outlook or Apple Calendar, Compass records it as their reply. It shows up in the meeting's reply band as Coming, Maybe or Not coming, with a count such as "1 of 5 coming" and what quorum needs. The "Answer now" button in the same email still works too, without signing in.
A calendar answer counts for as long as the email's link does. If the meeting has already started, or the director answers an invitation from before the meeting moved, Compass ignores it.
When a meeting moves, earlier replies are cleared and invitees are asked to "Please RSVP again". If someone clicks an old RSVP link, the page tells them whether the meeting moved (and to use the newer email) or was cancelled. Invitations sent before October 22 still carry the old address until the next reminder or reschedule.
RSVP works on every plan: Free, Compass Pro and Enterprise.
Also this week
- Board setup has "Add emails later". A chair can move from Members to Quorum without every address, and an "Add member emails" reminder waits afterward.
- New organizations start with email sending turned on.
- The free agenda and minutes templates now download as Word, plain text or Markdown.
- If your nonprofit belongs to one of the networks listed at compass.karmahq.org/nonprofit-networks, you can ask for 50% off Compass Pro. Our team confirms eligibility; the discount isn't applied automatically at checkout.
- A new Security page says your records are not used to train AI models, which AI companies process them, and how storage, access and deletion work.
- On the minutes review page, the draft now opens by default while questions remain, and "Read the full draft" opens the draft minutes.
FAQ
Can I use Karma Compass in ChatGPT or Claude? Yes. Karma Compass works as a connector in Claude and ChatGPT, and in Claude Code, Codex and other apps that accept a custom connector. You can ask about board decisions, schedule meetings, draft agendas and minutes, and follow up on action items without opening Karma Compass. Connecting is included in every plan; features that need Compass Pro, like playbooks and emailing action item owners, still need it.
Does Karma Compass have an MCP server? Yes. Karma Compass is a remote MCP server that signs you in with OAuth, so there are no API keys. You'll find the connector address under Connected agents in Karma Compass and on compass.karmahq.org/agents.
Can an AI assistant approve things or adopt minutes in Karma Compass? No. Approvals, adopting minutes and adding a board member wait for a person's click in Karma Compass. The assistant prepares the step and gives you a link to the screen where you confirm it. It votes for you only when you tell it how.
Does Karma Compass mark action items done automatically when someone replies to an email? No. When an action item's owner replies to a follow-up email sent from Karma Compass, the reply appears on Mission Control with a "Mark complete" button. An organization admin, an executive director who sits on the board, or the board's chair, vice chair, secretary or staff liaison decides. This is part of Compass Pro.
How do I share a board packet with someone outside the board? In Karma Compass, a meeting manager opens the meeting's Agenda page and creates a shareable link for the published packet. Anyone with the link can read and download it without an account, and a meeting manager can stop sharing at any time. Executive-session packets can't be shared. This works on every plan.
How do you correct board minutes after they've been adopted? In Karma Compass, a meeting manager proposes a correction, and an administrator, executive director, chair or secretary adopts it. The original stays in Record history and the new PDF is marked as amended. This works on every plan.
Can board members RSVP to a Karma Compass meeting without logging in? Yes. Directors can press Yes, Maybe or No on the calendar invitation in Gmail, Outlook or Apple Calendar, or use the "Answer now" button in the RSVP email. Karma Compass records the reply either way. RSVP is included in every plan.
